-----
Mahatma Gandhi, three days before his assassination, in an article in his
weekly ‘Harijan’, said that the Congress had won only political freedom
and that “economic freedom, social and moral freedom” were yet to be
won. This of course has to be through appropriate economic, social and moral
reforms. Again, on the last day of his life, in a note to the Congress
leadership, he called upon the Congress to become a “Lok Sevak Sangh”
the members of which should work among and serve the people of India at their
grass root level and help ensure their all-round growth and well-being as well
as help them play their part effectively, which meant their empowerment
as the sovereign people of the land at all levels of our democracy. The result
of carrying out these two tasks would certainly be that democracy in India,
which was then in its infant stage, would become stable, strong, peaceful, economically
self-contained, contented, ever alert and vibrant, with its governments, its
political parties and leaders ever subservient to and working for the good of
the people.
It is a sad commentary on the working of successive governments in
free-India that no serious effort has been made to carry out these two very
vital Gandhian tasks with the result that the picture of India as Gandhiji had
visualized has not emerged, even in its faintest form, even after 65 years
since he left us and with the further result that, according to the latest
report of the National Sample Survey, 65 per cent of our population are still
living below the poverty line !
It is at least now to remind ourselves of this sacred, bounden and inescapable
duty we owe to Mahatmaji and to the country to set right matters and consider
how best these twin tasks set by him should be taken up for giving shape and
effect to them in the required manner, and also take appropriate decisions as
to how best to involve and ensure the participation of persons and institutions,
including the government, in this task at various levels, that the above
National Convention is being called by the organizations named below. The
Convention is intended to become a turning point and a trend setter in ensuring
the good of all on Gandhian lines in Gandhiji’s own land, our dear
Bharat.
We earnestly invite you to participate in the Convention and lend your
active support to the national effort that follows.
